What to Know About Indie Music

Since the explosion of larger recording companies, there has been a backlash by people who do not like the larger control they have over the music industry. These people are often called “indie” musicians, even though it is an oversimplification. Independent’s term is often used to describe their personality rather than their music style.

when you hear the term “indie music” any number of bands might come to mind. Modest Mouse, Bon Iver, Arcade Fire, The Smiths, Belle and Sebastian, The National, Mac DeMarco – these artists represent the indie music scene, and yet they are all different.
Indie can be a bit of a confusing term because by it isn’t a genre. Indie pop, indie rock, and indie-folk are all genres, and they are all related, but musically they are different.

Indie rock

Indie rock is a subgenre of rock music that originated in the United States, United Kingdom, and New Zealand from the 1970s to the 1980s. Originally used to describe independent record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock or “guitar pop-rock”. In the 1980s, the use of the term “indie” (or “indie pop”) started to shift from its reference to recording companies to describe the style of music produced on punk and post-punk labels. During the 1990s, grunge and punk revival bands in the US and Britpop bands in the UK broke into the mainstream, and the term “alternative” lost its original counter-cultural meaning. The term “indie rock” became associated with the bands and genres that remained dedicated to their independent status. By the end of the 1990s, indie rock developed several subgenres and related styles, including lo-fi, noise pop, emo, slowcore, post-rock, and math rock. In the 2000s, changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the internet-enabled a new wave of indie rock bands to achieve mainstream success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.

In the early 2000s, a new group of bands that played a stripped-down, back-to-basics version of guitar rock emerged into the mainstream. The commercial breakthrough from these scenes was led by four bands: The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives, and The Vines. Emo also broke into mainstream culture in the early 2000s. By the end of the decade, the proliferation of indie bands was being referred to as an “indie landfill”, with the term “Landfill Indie” becoming used by some critics/websites in 2020 as a sub-genre for a certain type of 2000s indie band, in the same way, Britpop is used for British guitar music of the 1990s.

Indie music in the computer age

Artists used to be dependent on companies with capital because it was too expensive for an artist to produce and distribute an album themselves. Because of this, the musical choices offered to the public were decided by the record companies. Today, technology is finally at the point where it is affordable for an artist to produce and distribute an album without the assistance of a label.

With the arrival of new, relatively inexpensive recording devices and instruments, more individuals are able to participate in the creation of music than ever before. Studio time is extremely expensive and difficult to obtain, so most, if not all, of the newer technology is centered on the home computer, in the form of relatively cheap hardware and software. The result of this new technology is that anyone can produce studio-quality music from their own home. Every homemade recording can be considered an indie recording. Additionally, the development of new technology allows for greater experimentation with sound since the means to do so are made widely available to the general public. After hardware and software expenses, the ambitious artist need not worry about more costs, like fees for studio space or sound engineers. As production has been made easier, distribution and advertising have also become easier because of modern advancements in technology, namely through the internet.

With the dawn of the internet, the concepts of distribution, word-of-mouth, and community have gone through ground-breaking transformations. Internet technology allows artists to introduce their music to a potentially enormous audience at a low cost without necessarily affiliating with any record label. Personalized websites help artists connect more directly to their fans. Internet communities transform local-based word-of-mouth into an international network of music listeners. Making music available to download on the internet makes distribution as easy as clicking a button.

Indie and technology

The concept of the album was first introduced with the invention of the phonograph. Artists became dependent on companies with capital because it was too expensive for an artist to produce and distribute an album themselves. Because of this, the choices offered to the public were decided by what the record companies chose to support and distribute. Today, technology is finally at the point where it is affordable for an artist to produce and distribute an album without the assistance of a label. Ironically, this same technology is available to consumers who can easily reproduce the music. This makes it increasingly difficult for an artist to make a living from selling albums alone.

Internet technology allows artists to introduce their music to a potentially enormous audience at a low cost without necessarily affiliating with a major recording label. The design of digital music software encourages the discovery of new music. Sites with larger libraries of songs are the most successful. This, in turn, creates many opportunities for independent bands. Royalties from digital services could prove to be an important source of income. If an artist has already paid to record, manufacture, and promote their album, there is little to no additional cost for independent artists to distribute their music online. Digital services offer the opportunity of exposure to new fans and the possibility of increased sales through online retailers. Artists can also release music more frequently and quickly if it is made available online. Additionally, artists have the option of releasing a limited edition, out-of-print, or live material that would be too costly to produce through traditional means.

With the arrival of newer and relatively inexpensive recording devices and instruments, more individuals are able to participate in the creation of music than ever before. Studio time is extremely expensive and difficult to obtain. The result of new technology is that anyone can produce studio-quality music from their own home. Additionally, the development of new technology allows for greater experimentation with sound. An artist is able to experiment without necessarily spending the money to do it in an expensive studio.

Characteristics of Indie Rock Music

From hip-hop to pop and post-punk, several subgenres fall under the umbrella of indie rock music. Numerous defining characteristics within the indie rock music genre make it unique. Let’s take a look at a few of them now.

DIY aesthetic:

Indie bands are well-known for their home recordings and DIY philosophy. In indie rock’s early days, artists used a tape recorder to record their music, while today’s artists use laptops and sound cards. Unlike mainstream artists signed to major record labels, indie artists typically don’t receive advance payments from a record company to record their music.

Lo-fi sound:

Indie rock’s lo-fi sound came about because its artists often didn’t have access to the production tools used by major labels. Without the resources or backing of a major record label, the lo-fi aesthetic came to define indie music. Today commercial production teams use high-tech systems to mimic indie’s lo-fi sound.

Songs Written by the Band:

Unlike mainstream artists who often rely on a team of songwriters to produce their hits, indie rock artists typically write all of their music themselves.

A Brief History of Indie Music

In the 1970s, and in the UK punk scene – when independent music reflected a raw and youthful spirit. This is (was?) the time when the term came to reflect an unprecedented new attitude toward creating and distributing music.

A number of histories cite the Buzzcocks’ DIY production of their debut EP Spiral Scratch in 1977 as a pivotal release for independent music. This is due particularly to the record’s success despite its production being funded only through money raised from the band’s friends and families. Thousands of copies were sold with the help of Virgin’s Manchester branch. More than anything, this convergence of record stores and independent artists provided the blueprint for what was to come. Independently produced music became commercially viable.

It was, of course, the Sex Pistols (in the same year as the Buzzcocks) who took the young-adult malaise of other punk groups and morphed it into a powerfully anarchic sensibility, resulting in numerous instances of what is often called “bad publicity”. They are perhaps the archetypal demonstration of the usefulness of outrage. And, the more dangerous punk music seemingly became, the more the public yearned for it and ensured its popularity.
